For the first time the Base64 algorithm was described back in 1986 and since then Base64 is doing its job well. However, since then new tasks have appeared, and they need a different approach. In order not to reinvent the wheel, the engineers slightly extended and/or modified Base64 which led to the emersion of new “standards” (also known as Base64 variations).
